On Today’s Show
Author Anne Grady shows us how to rethink what it means to be happy. We often think we must achieve something new to be happy: “If I get a master’s degree I’ll be happy,” “If I get married I’ll be happy,” or “If I get this car I’ll be happy.” The reality is that you can achieve all of your dreams and still not be happy. You’re never always a certain emotion, and it’s really about taking time to acknowledge the good ones when they happen so that you can make it through the bad ones. If you chose to dwell on all of the negative things, you’re going to find them all the time. Life has ups and downs, and you get to choose where you want to focus.

1 Simple Thing Action:
Identify what you’re waiting for to be happy. Fill in the blank: “If ___________ I will be happy.” Example: “If I get promoted,” “If I get married,” “If I have kids,” “If I win a million dollars,” What is it that will make me happy? And then pare it down and think, “Okay, what do I need to do to be happy right now?”
Keep a Gratitude Journal. When you wake up each morning, write down three things you are grateful for or that make you happy. Then, when you go to bed, write down three things that made you smile or feel grateful. As you begin to shift your focus to those things that make you grateful, you’ll find that you attract more into your life.
