On Today’s Show
There is no better success strategy than simply committing ourselves to be a person of the highest character. The ability to make and keep promises builds trust, and when people know they can trust us, they are more likely to do business with us. On this episode, Dave Kirby looks back and shares his thoughts on the important lessons August Turak teaches from his book, “Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks: One CEO’s Quest for Meaning and Authenticity.”

1 Simple Thing Actions:
3 Things you can do today to take a step forward in your integrity and reputation with others:
- Make a list of your “promises outstanding” and fulfill one today. Or make a list of “promises and/or commitments you need to make” and commit to one formally today. And the most important recommendation is never to make people ask you to fulfill a promise.
- Do ONE THING today that needs to be done, but that you find difficult, frustrating or just boring. Do it primarily as an exercise in self-control. Alternately, design a simple daily exercise just to build willpower and self-control. And start or join a community if necessary to keep you on the straight and narrow.
- Do a quick and dirty status report on “promises outstanding” in both your personal and private life. Get into the habit of writing down your promises first and constantly check if you are over committing and under delivering on those promises. Make a plan to improve.
Make a list of those who need, deserve, or could benefit from a status report on an “open promise.” Create and deliver one short status report letting your boss, a co-worker, a friend or a loved one know where you are on coming through on a commitment.
